U.S. online gaming platform Roblox has reportedly announced that it has signed a partnership agreement with Sony Music Entertainment. Under the agreement, the two companies will bring more exciting music content and experiences to the Roblox game community. Various Sony Music artists will have a new channel to bring their work to the game community and earn new revenue.
Through this partnership, Roblox will help music artists reach out to their fan communities through a variety of ways and activities. These include online concerts, merchandising, and events integrated within online games.
Sony Music Entertainment said it hopes that this agreement will broaden their collaboration and provide more business opportunities for the Roblox team to convergence the music and gaming industries. In addition, the immersive online environment also provides a valuable opportunity for artists to reach out to fans.
Last month several U.S. music publishers launched a lawsuit against Roblox, alleging infringement for providing music content and formats within online games without the artists' authorization and without paying royalties.
The lawsuit was filed by music publishers including Universal Music, Big Machine Records, Concord Music Group, Downtown Music Publishing, Kobalt Music Group, and Hipgnosis Music Fund. In response to the lawsuit, Roblox claimed that the music publishing industry has misunderstood how the Roblox gaming platform works.
Roblox stated that it does not allow music infringement and uses filtering technology to prevent non-licensed music content from appearing in its games. The company has also responded positively to external requests to remove infringing content.
However, this partnership with Sony Music shows that Roblox is aware of the importance of working with a music company.
